Overview

The KNUCKAN is one of the two large titanium pieces in the Max Knives catalogue and easily among the most generous formats in the impact tool range: 110 mm long by 60 mm high, at 11 mm thick. The scale reads 187 g, a figure that says everything about the material, since the same volume in brass would weigh close to twice as much. The body is listed as 100% titanium, and the tungsten carbide tip it carries works as a glass breaker. A kydex sheath with belt carry comes with the piece.

Titanium: light and corrosion-proof

Titanium holds a special place among workshop metals: its density sits halfway between aluminium and steel, while its mechanical strength lines up with steel grades. You therefore get a thick piece without the weight such a volume would bring anywhere else. It does not rust either: the surface instantly grows a stable oxide film a few nanometres deep, which re-forms the moment it is scratched and lets the metal shrug off sweat, seawater and long spells of damp without marking. That is what makes it a natural choice for objects carried on the body.

Care

Titanium asks for the bare minimum: warm water, a little soap, a rinse and a dry. It neither rusts nor tarnishes, so no specific product is needed. Keep steel wool and abrasives away, as they would leave ferrous particles on the surface. Shake sand or grit out of the kydex sheath before returning the piece to it, and check the belt fittings for tightness now and then.
