Overview

An odd number on the grid, the PBF-3 therefore carries a clip point; it is also recognised at a glance: its arms are skeletonised with a line of aligned round holes that let daylight through the handle. The material removed changes the feel in the hand as much as the look. Underneath, the construction is the one shared by the whole series: integral black anodized aluminium, two exposed pivot screws, and a 107 mm clip point blade in D2 tool steel with a light satin finish. 142 mm closed, 245 mm open.

What skeletonising changes in the handle

Piercing the handle removes material without touching its structure: the arms keep their integral anodized aluminium construction, but contact becomes different, punctuated by the rim of each hole. It is also the only one of the eight PBF whose arms do not measure 12.50 mm thick: they measure 12.44 mm. Six hundredths of a millimetre is little on a ruler, but it is the dimensional signature of this particular handle. Its twin, the tanto PBF-4, carries exactly the same pierced pattern.

Care

The piercings add a few more corners to clean: a soft brush or a puff of compressed air is enough to clear dust from the holes. Then wipe the blade and put back a film of light oil, as any tool steel asks. The two pivots are served by a drop of oil and retightened as needed. For sharpening, the clip point presents a single edge, continuous from the grind all the way to its low tip.
