Overview

The PBF-1 opens the series of eight butterfly knives. Two handle arms hinged on two pivots swing around the blade to enclose it or release it, and the whole pleasure of the object lives in that rotation, in its rhythm and in the balance your fingers eventually find. The 108 mm clip point blade is cut from D2 tool steel; the black anodized aluminium handle is solid, of integral construction, and runs a V-shaped ridge along its entire length. Closed it measures 142 mm; open, 245 mm.

Where the PBF-1 sits in the grid

The eight PBF references read like a two-way table: four handle patterns crossed with two blade geometries. Odd numbers always carry a clip point, even numbers always a tanto, and the references work in pairs — 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8 — each pair sharing exactly the same handle. The PBF-1 takes the first square: solid handle with a longitudinal V ridge, clip point blade. Its twin, the PBF-2, reuses that handle with a tanto tip. At 109 g, the PBF-1 is among the three lightest of the series, alongside the PBF-7 and PBF-8.

Care

Wipe the blade after every handling session and dry it before closing the arms: like any tool steel, D2 keeps best under a thin film of light oil. A single drop on each of the two pivots is enough to maintain the smooth rotation that makes a butterfly knife enjoyable. Check the tightness of the two exposed pivot screws from time to time. When sharpening, follow the curved edge of the clip point all the way to its fine, low tip.
