Overview

At 213 mm open and 120 mm in the pocket, the MK142 sits squarely among large general-purpose folders. Its drop point blade in 3Cr13 steel measures 92 mm and carries a black finish; the aluminium handle is machined with a military-style pattern that does more than decorate, since the relief gives purchase to a wet or gloved hand. The opening is assisted and the layout ambidextrous, for right and left hand alike. A belt clip lets you carry it inside the pocket, spine outward, ready to draw.

Assisted opening, and what it changes

An assisted opening is not an automatic one. There is no button: you start the blade moving through the first few degrees of its travel, and an internal spring takes over to finish the swing and seat the blade against its lock. The motion fits in one hand, it is crisp and repeatable, and mechanically the knife remains a manually started, spring-assisted folder. On the MK142 that assistance is paired with an ambidextrous layout: the same gesture works right or left handed, with no need to flip the knife over in your palm.

Care

Aluminium does not rust, but it does scratch: soapy water and a soft cloth are all the handle needs, with no abrasive product that would eat into the finish of the pattern. On the blade side, dry after any contact with water, especially around the pivot where moisture likes to sit. On an assisted knife, a clean pivot matters twice over: a speck of grit or a pocket fibre is enough to slow the spring. A puff of compressed air and a drop of light oil each season keep the action lively.
