Max Knives P27S — 440C tanto butterfly knife with a 100 mm blade

Overview

The P27S is a butterfly knife whose 100 mm tanto blade is cut from 440C steel. Closed, it measures 130 mm and the blade sits between the two stainless steel half-handles; opened, those handles come together into a single solid grip and the knife reaches 224 mm. The silver finish leaves the steel visible across the whole piece, so the tone stays the same from heel to tip, with no break between blade and handles.

About the tanto profile

A tanto does not end in a curve sweeping gently towards the tip: two straight segments meet at a distinct angle, easy to spot the moment you look at the blade side on. The main edge stays straight along almost its entire length, which suits clean cuts made with the material lying flat, and the steel keeps its height until a few millimetres from the point. Within this family of balisongs, where drop points and centred spear points are the rule, the P27S is the only one to bring that angular geometry to a 100 mm blade.

The P27S blade measures 100 mm, in 440C steel, ground to a tanto outline. The knife is 130 mm long closed, with the blade stowed between the handles, and 224 mm open, the handles joined into one grip. Both half-handles are made of stainless steel and each turns on its own pivot around the heel of the blade. The stated finish is silver, on the blade as well as on the handles.

Care

Run a dry cloth over the blade and along the inside of the handles after use: that is where dust and fingerprints collect. 440C is a stainless steel, but a thin film of care oil wiped on keeps the silver finish looking bright, particularly if the knife travels with you. A drop of light oil on each of the two pivots keeps the rotation even. Store the piece somewhere dry, with the handles closed over the blade.
