Max Knives P61B — Black butterfly knife, solid handles, spear point

Overview

Where the rest of the series goes for skeletonising, the P61B takes the opposite route: both black stainless handles are solid, with no holes or cut-outs, from the latch all the way to the pivot. The surface is continuous, the tone even, and the knife reads as a dark bar when closed at 122 mm, the most compact folded length in the whole batch. Open, it extends to 213 mm around its 96 mm spear point blade. On the scale it shares the 115 g of the heavier models.

Solid handles at 9.17 mm

A solid handle is not merely heavier than a skeletonised one: it is held differently. The palm meets an unbroken surface, with no drilled edge or hollow for a finger to drop into, so the grip is built on pressure rather than on landmarks. At 9.17 mm this is also the thickest section of the series, filling the hand more once both halves are joined into a grip. With material spread along the whole length instead of removed in places, balance stays even from one end of the handle to the other, and the rotation runs without a tight spot or a slack one.

Care

With no cut-outs, this model is the easiest of the batch to clean: a cloth runs along the handles in a single sweep with nothing to work around. The trade-off is remembering what you cannot see, namely the inner channels where the blade sits: run a strip of thin fabric through them now and then. The pivots take a light oil, one drop each, working the handles to draw it in.
