Max Knives MK103 — Rescue folding knife, 440C, glass breaker and cutter

Overview

The MK103 gathers into one folder the functions you look for in a rescue knife. Its 67 mm drop point blade in 440C steel, black finish, handles ordinary cutting; alongside it, the nylon handle carries a glass breaker, a seatbelt cutter hook and a can opener. The lock is a liner lock backed by a secondary safety. Closed, it measures 94 mm long and 28 mm wide, and the belt clip lets you keep it within reach in a pocket, a glove box or a bag left in the vehicle.

Glass breaker and seatbelt cutter

Both accessories answer the same scenario: getting out of a vehicle when the doors will not open. The glass breaker is a hard point mounted on the handle; you set it into a corner of a side window, where tempered glass is weakest, and the pressure concentrated on a tiny area lets the whole pane give way at once. The seatbelt cutter keeps its edge inside a recess: you hook it over the webbing and pull, so the strap runs across a hidden blade with no risk of injuring the person strapped in. Neither one requires opening the knife.

Care

A rescue knife spends most of its life stowed away, which is exactly why it needs checking. Take it out two or three times a year, open it, confirm that the liner lock seats properly and that the safety works, then close it again. Wipe the 440C blade after each use; the nylon handle cleans up with warm water and a cloth. Clear the seatbelt cutter recess of the fibres that collect in it, otherwise the cut loses its bite. Sharpen the blade at the original angle on a stone or a ceramic rod.
