Max Knives MK114PM — 440C folding knife, 49 mm blade, micarta handle

Overview

The MK114PM is a folding knife, and that alone sets it apart from the fixed blades around it in the Fred Perrin range. Closed it takes up 69 mm; open it runs to 117, of which 49 mm is blade in 440C steel with a plain edge. The blade is a drop point 3 mm thick. The handle is micarta. One more distinction: it is the only piece in the family delivered with a cordura pouch, where every other one arrives in kydex.

A 49 mm drop point, and why that format

The drop point takes its name from the spine, which falls in a gentle, continuous slope from the handle to the tip. That slope places the point slightly below the line of the spine, nearer the middle of the blade than the top, and gives it a wide base: the tip stays strong and controllable, and the thumb can rest on the spine to guide fine work. Over 49 mm the edge curve is almost continuous from heel to point, which makes this format an excellent everyday knife, the one that opens, trims and cuts without asking for thought. Folded to 69 mm, it disappears into a pocket.

Care

On a folder, care starts at the pivot: rinse, dry, then place a drop of light oil at the axis and work the blade several times to spread it. A little compressed air or a soft brush clears the fibres and dust that gather in the handle slot. Micarta cleans with soapy water and dries on its own. The 440C blade is stainless: wipe it after use, oil it before long storage. The cordura pouch is washed by hand and dried in air.
