Overview

The Small Griffe takes the idea Fred Perrin has been working on since the early 1990s, a ring that keeps hand and tool together, and shrinks it. Everything here is G10, blade included, and the whole thing is cut from one block with no metal part at all. The knife measures 89 mm overall for a 35 mm plain edge and 2.5 mm of thickness, and weighs 7 g. A kydex sheath is supplied. It is the lightest piece in the whole Fred Perrin range published by Max Knives.

What G10 changes

G10 is a laminated composite: layers of glass cloth set in resin, pressed and cured, then machined from the solid. It does not rust, does not take up moisture and holds its dimensions in heat, cold or damp. It is also a light material, which explains the sharpest contrast in the catalogue: at an identical 89 mm overall, the FPGDMINI damascus Mini Griffe weighs 55 g where this one weighs 7. Same outline, same bulk, two materials with nothing in common.

Technical specifications

Blade and handle are G10 in one continuous piece. The blade shape is a claw, the edge is plain and measures 35 mm, with a thickness of 2.5 mm. Overall length is 89 mm and quoted weight is 7 g. The knife ships with its kydex sheath. To place this format within the family, the standard G10 Griffe, the FPGG10, measures 122 mm overall and weighs 19 g: the mini version therefore drops 33 mm and a good share of the mass.

Care

A knife made entirely of G10 cleans up without any special precautions: clear water, a soft cloth, air-drying. Nothing rusts, nothing pits, and the material does not move when it meets moisture. Simply avoid leaving the piece shut away wet in its sheath for long stretches, which does nobody any favours. The kydex sheath rinses the same way. If the surface dulls with use, a pass with a dry cloth is enough to bring its look back.
