Max Knives NS137 — 4-point black shuriken, 420 steel, 101 mm

Overview

The NS137 borrows the four-point geometry of the NS series and treats it in black from tip to tip. Its 101 mm diameter sits just above the mid-size pieces, with four long arms and a solid hub that gives a steady hold between thumb and forefinger. The 3 mm thickness runs across the whole 420 stainless plate. A belt sheath comes with the piece and keeps it stowed between sessions.

What a black finish changes

Black works on two fronts. In a collection it forms a family of its own: lined up beside the NS139, NS140 and NS142, all of them dark, the NS137 belongs to a set that the silver stars set off by contrast. On the range, a dark piece reads differently depending on the backing, standing out on a pale board and blending into darker wood, which encourages a careful look before each throw. It is also a finish that does not throw sunlight back at you.

Technical specifications

Four points for an overall diameter of 101 mm, on a 3 mm plate of 420 stainless steel. The black finish covers the entire star, hub and tips included. A belt sheath is supplied. No weight is quoted for the NS137; the 101 mm diameter and the 3 mm of material place the piece between the small formats and the large stars of the range.

Care

On a black finish, fingerprints and wood dust show sooner than on bare steel: a microfibre cloth at the end of a session puts the piece back in order. 420 is stainless, which is no reason to skip drying the star when it comes home wet from an outdoor session. Store it dry inside its sheath, and leave the sheath open to the air if the fabric has taken on moisture.
