Max Knives P47 — Butterfly knife, green aluminium, 105 mm blade

Overview

The P47 is the large format of this selection: 229 mm with the handles brought together, against 127 mm in the closed position. Its drop-point blade measures 105 mm, the longest here, in a 3Cr13 steel wearing a black finish. Against that black, the two anodised aluminium half-handles show a deep green that gives the knife its visual signature. It is a piece that gets noticed, and whose length makes itself felt as soon as you pick it up.

About anodised aluminium

Anodising is not paint laid over aluminium: it is an electrochemical transformation of the metal's surface, thickening its natural oxide layer before a dye is fixed into it. The green tone is therefore part of the handle rather than a lacquer liable to flake at the edges. That hardened layer also protects the aluminium from marks and surface oxidation. The second consequence matters even more in the hand: aluminium is markedly less dense than steel, so on a 229 mm balisong the handles stay manageable despite the length on offer.

The P47 blade is 3Cr13 steel, drawn as a drop point, 105 mm long and given a black finish. The knife measures 127 mm closed and 229 mm open. Its two half-handles are green anodised aluminium, each hinged on its pivot around the heel of the blade, which they enclose in the closed position. The 105 mm blade is the longest in this selection, and 229 mm the greatest open length among these balisongs.

Care

Anodised aluminium cleans up with a soft, slightly damp cloth; steer clear of alkaline cleaners of the oven-product kind, which attack the anodic layer and dull the green. For the blade, a wipe after use and an occasional veil of care oil are enough to preserve the black finish. The pivots each take a drop of light oil as soon as the rotation feels less crisp. Store the P47 closed and flat, in a dry drawer rather than loose in a bag pocket.
