Max Knives Black-1 — All-black butterfly knife, straight back

Overview

The Black-1 plays one card and plays it fully: everything is black, from the solid handle halves to the blade. Under that single tone sits a butterfly knife measuring 230 mm open, 123 mm closed, 110 g, with a 115 mm straight back blade in stainless steel and handles combining steel and G10 over 10.60 mm of thickness. Two pivots swing the handle halves around the blade until they form a grip that a latch holds shut.

What a straight back does

Straight back means exactly what it says: the spine of the blade runs dead straight from heel to tip, and it is the edge that rises in one continuous curve to meet it. That profile gives a long, uninterrupted cutting section, at ease on drawn cuts as well as on pressed work with a thumb laid on the spine. Against the Black-2 and its angled tanto tip, the Black-1 is the long-cut half of the pair, and the one with the longer blade, 115 mm against 105.

Care

A black finish stays clean with gentle treatment: a soft cloth, dry or barely damp, and no abrasive powder or pad that would mark the surface. Dry the stainless steel blade after any contact with water. G10 has no fear of moisture and cleans with plain water before being wiped down. On the two pivots, a drop of fine oil and a few rotations keep the movement fluid; take the chance to check the screws and the play of the latch.
