Max Knives MKO7 — Double action automatic knife, 80 mm D2 tanto blade

Overview

The MKO7 is the tanto version of its model: 80 mm of D2 steel 3 mm thick, set on a 130 mm black anodised aluminium handle. Open, it measures 210 mm. The handle carries a pocket clip and finishes in a glass breaker, the hard point designed to focus an impact onto a few square millimetres. The automatic works in double action, out and back on the same control, and a nylon sheath comes along with the knife.

The tanto point

A tanto looks like no other blade shape: instead of running in one continuous curve to the tip, the edge takes a sharp angle and climbs back up as a second straight facet. The result is two distinct edges that do different jobs. The main edge, long and straight, cuts on the push along its full length, which suits work done on a flat surface. The rising section concentrates effort behind a heavily shouldered point: there is a lot of material right behind it, where a fine tip would be taking the load alone. That geometry lends itself to piercing and to work under pressure, and you can recognise it at a glance.

Care

The tanto angle creates a meeting point between two edges, halfway along the blade: that is where cutting residue gathers, so give it a firm pass with the cloth while you clean the rest. D2 is content with a systematic wipe and the occasional film of oil to stay untroubled. Check the glass breaker too: its point should stay clear rather than packed with pocket lint. Finally, clip screws sometimes work loose from repeated draws, and a screwdriver puts them back in seconds.
