Max Knives MKO6 — Double action automatic, 84 mm D2 drop point blade

Overview

The MKO6 is the most compact of the D2 steel automatics in this series: 118 mm of handle, 84 mm of blade, 201 mm overall once open. Its drop point blade, 3 mm thick, uses the most common and most adaptable shape there is, with a low point sitting in line with the blade. The handle is black anodised aluminium, and it has one peculiarity within this group: it carries no clip at all. The knife ships with its nylon sheath.

No clip: what that changes about carry

The MKO6 is the only knife here without a clip, and that matters for how it travels with you. A handle left smooth along its whole length catches on nothing: it does not bite into a pocket lining, it does not scrape a worktop when you set it down, it leaves no mark on a bag carried over the shoulder. There are no screws to keep an eye on either, and no part to remove in order to clean underneath. In exchange, carry happens elsewhere: in the nylon sheath supplied for belt wear, in a jacket pocket, in a compartment of a pack, anywhere the knife can travel flat rather than hanging from an edge of fabric.

Care

A handle without a clip cleans up in one pass, damp cloth then dry cloth, with nothing to work around. The blade asks for more attention: D2 is a tool steel that is happiest never left wet, so wipe it as soon as it has been used and oil it very lightly before any long spell in storage. Since carry happens largely in the sheath, remember to shake that out to clear sand and to leave it open to dry rather than putting the knife away in fabric that is still damp.
