Max Knives MKO47DP — Automatic knife, 70 mm D2 drop point blade

Overview

Within the MKO47 series, this is the reference you pocket without thinking about it. The black anodised aluminium handle measures 102 mm, the open knife 172 mm, and the scales stop at 75 g. The D2 drop point blade, 70 mm long and 3 mm thick, covers the whole spread of ordinary jobs: opening a parcel, trimming a strap, shaping a hose plug, putting a snack together. A belt clip handles daily carry and a nylon sheath comes along for days when the pocket is already full.

The push-button movement

Opening an automatic is not something you learn so much as something you organise. The hand takes the handle in a full palm grip, the thumb finds the button without the fingers having to move, and the blade goes. Nothing protrudes before opening, there is no stud or flipper to snag, which is why these knives work well with handling gloves or frozen hands. Two habits are worth building from day one: point the knife away from yourself and others before pressing, and check that nothing sits in the path the blade will travel. That discipline applies in the workshop as much as at the bottom of a bag.

Care

After a day outdoors, in the rain or by the water, the first job is to rinse the blade under clean water to shift salt and dust, then wipe it and let it dry through: D2 does not take kindly to sitting wet under a clip. A very lightly oiled cloth then passes over both faces. The anodised handle asks for the same treatment, minus any solvent. As for the nylon sheath, tip the grains of sand out of it before the knife goes back in, otherwise they end up rubbing the handle at every insertion.
