Max Knives FPPUSHT — 6AL4V titanium mini push dagger, Fred Perrin

Overview

The FPPUSHT takes Fred Perrin's mini push dagger drawing and renders it wholly in 6AL4V titanium, blade included. The piece measures 80 mm overall by 53 mm wide and 2.6 mm thick, with a 45 mm double-edged blade and a 35 mm handle set square to it. It is supplied with a moulded kydex sheath and a paracord. This is the version of the series where the material itself becomes the subject, rather than the finish.

6AL4V titanium

6AL4V is not pure titanium: it is an alloy, six per cent aluminium and four per cent vanadium with titanium for the balance, and the most widely used of all titanium alloys. It turns up in aerospace and in medical implants for three reasons that hold in cutlery too: it is markedly lighter than steel for the same volume, it is non-magnetic, and it does not rust, even in prolonged contact with salt water. Naming the alloy rather than saying titanium alone states exactly what the piece is made of.

A 100% titanium build, with no steel part. Moulded kydex sheath and paracord included. The FPPUSHT is the titanium version of the Fred Perrin design issued by Max Knives, which also comes in black steel, silver steel and G10.

Care

6AL4V titanium does not oxidise: it needs no oil, no treatment and no special precaution after contact with water. A rinse in clean water and a wipe with a soft cloth are enough to restore its original look. Avoid abrasive pads and chlorinated cleaners, which would mark the surface. The kydex sheath is cleaned the same way, with lukewarm water, then left to air dry; the paracord takes soapy water without trouble.
